Given the quality of our program, many participants from the UK, Australia, and the US have earned academic credit through their universities. However, this is not required to join. Each Expedition includes 6–8 hours of daily learning through field research, conservation work, meetings, and group discussions. Even without official credit, students can list this experience on their resume, which has proven valuable for job, internship, and graduate applications.

In recent years, students from UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, Arizona State, UC Berkeley, CSU Monterey, UC Davis, RMIT-Australia, and CSU Fullerton have received credit from their own universities after meeting BIOMA’s course requirements. Interested students should consult their academic advisor using our syllabus, and confirm in advance if the program fits their academic needs. BIOMA provides a certificate and transcript. There is a USD$175 fee.

 Frequently asked questions

about Academic Credit.

  • Less than 10% of our students choose to take it. Most join for the hands-on practice, new skills, applied real-world learning, and network expansion. Academic credit is optional and does not affect the program’s ability to boost your resume, increase your competitiveness, or strengthen your applications for internships, jobs, or graduate programs. 

  • Since transfer credit from another university can cost about ~ US$500 per unit—sometimes as much as the program itself—we recommend checking if your university can award independent research, internship, or science training credit based on our own or adapted syllabus. This can often be recognized in-house, therefore more cost-effective for you.

  • 1.        Meet with your academic advisor and share our syllabus,
    2.        Ask if you can earn credit (e.g., independent research, internship, or science training) through your university.
    3.        If approved, follow our syllabus, and meet your university’s requirements.
    4.        Pay the US $195 Academic Credit BIOMA Assessment Fee.
    5.        Coordinate with your BIOMA program field instructor to complete required tasks during and after the program.

  • 1.        Pre-field preparation with assigned readings and documents review.
    2.        On-site assessment through an experiential field journal.
    3.        Participation in group discussions and completion of field tasks.
    4.        A final report—either data analysis–based or a literature review—if required by your university.
